CANTERBURY TALE

CANTERBURY TALE
1.Why is Geoffrey Chaucer considered the father of the English Language?

He was an opponent to Latin and French. He translated in English important works such as Boccaccio’s the Decameron and Boethius´s Consolation of Philosophy. That gave popularity to English in London.
One of his most famous works was Troilus and Criseyde which was a romantic story. Also the Canterbury Tales which is about pilgrim’s tales traveling around to a cathedral.
2.What event started the traditional pilgrimage to Canterbury?
Thomas Becket was a priest who was very religious in the Catholic Church. He put god in first place rather than people. The king Henry wanted Becket to worship him instead of God but that did not happen. Thomas Becket was killed in the church. Since that day people go pilgrimage to Canterbury because they related with a holy place and it is used to pray.
3. What sort of picture did Chaucer want to portray about English society through his tales?
He wanted to make people read in English to make it popular. The majority of the population spoke latin and french but gradually it started to decay and English became an important language.
